Dear… is an independent architectural and spatial practices publication, motivated to inspire and cultivate meaningful debates across international networks of spatial practitioners; all of whom share particularly humanistic and social concerns and approaches in their praxes.

The Dear… idea came about amongst people with a desire to uncover critical, personal and imaginative thoughts. We want to encourage those who may not normally publish to bring thinking into the act of making. The publication will contribute to architectural debate and dialogue by offering room for doubt and motivation.

Dear…
on Dead Ends
issue #2, 2012

We are pleased to welcome you to the second issue of Dear... where 16 contributors, representing nine nations, address both universal and particular questions and issues arising out of speculations upon the wider thematic of Dead End(s). Through their diverse array of works, one encounters and explores Dead End(s) as – amongst other things – expressions of cessation and closure, changes in direction and momentum, as well as instigations and openings. This issue interweaves spatial projects and theoretical reflections that mutually address and embody the theme’s double entendre.

Dear…
on Courtesy
issue #1, 2011

In this first issue of Dear... the roles that space and spatial practitioners hold in dialogue with one another, and with users, situations, and society are questioned through the theme of Courtesy.

Contemporary market-driven economics and politics tend to emphasise individuality and its rights and protection. In response to this perspective, we wish to re-consider the meanings of being together – of the collective in everyday life. Dear... recollects upon Courtesy as gestures of modesty and politeness, in respect to diverse users, co-creators and spaces which – due to differences – we may not always know 'to the bone'. Dear... explores the conceptions and gestures of Courtesy, to suggest directions which may deliver both reflections and propositions.

The contributions contained in this inaugural issue exemplify how Courtesy may activate a variety of responses within the built environment; spanning from the challenges of climate change to transformations due to particular cultural, social and political circumstances. Through means of receptive practices and spatial strategies, Courtesy is explored herein as matters of personal guidance, transitions, pragmatism, pleasures, conflicts and love.

Call for Contributions
to Dear… Issue #2, on Dead Ends

We are happy to invite you to contribute to the second issue of Dear…, which will be published in January 2012. We warmly welcome visual and written contributions alike, and the focus of this issue is 'Dead Ends'.

Broadly speaking, and in one regard, 'dead ends' may be seen as expressions of closure and cessation. And in the same breath, dead ends may be experienced as inevitable, perpetual states of change, and/or shifts in direction and momentum, as well as catalysts for beginnings. And even still, there naturally exist numerous other conceptions and concretisations of 'Dead Ends'. We thus encourage individual and collaborative reflections related to this theme, and its subthemes. Contributions may reflect on any of these strands, though the list is in no way conclusive:

·  Dead ends and movement – backwards, forwards,
upwards, downwards, lateral, oblique, stasis, leaps…
·  Dead ends and liminal architecture and landscape
·  Dead ends and the labyrinth
·  Dead ends and the experimental
·  Dead ends in cancelled projects
·  Dead ends and reciprocal partners and/or
   incongruent foes
·  Dead ends and the reinvention of practice
·  Dead ends in place-making and community planning
·  Dead ends and re-use
·  Dead ends and resilience
